the rest of the piece was pure experimentation with the sounds, in line with my intention which was to play with ideas of referential listening, sometimes obviously showing the original sound source, and sometimes distorting it.

After 3 minutes of this gradual morphing motif, I was a bit concerned about losing the audience's attention, especially in the context of the radio. I decided a busier section would be good to vary the pace a bit, also to experiment with the other sounds I managed to find. I used borderlands, creating 2 new pieces; one with short sounds like button clicks, knocks etc. and another piece with more sustained sounds like scraping the inside of the machine and that sort of thing etc. I found short interesting sounds within the piece that I put towards the end of the long hum motif, in an attempt to foreshadow the busier section to come, also just to let people know there's something more coming.

The third sound to introduce was a low hum sound. Again, thinking about the similarities in behaviours between the sounds, this had a similar 'shape', but was not quite as circular as the  2 previous sounds. It kind of had this pattern which was a rise and fall, with the rise being an effort to push upwards followed by a heavy drop. I tried to match this with the rhythm of the previous sound and morphed them until the hum became prominent.

Trying to put into practice my interests in sounds that can morph, the first two sounds to appear in the piece have a similar circular feel to the sounds so I slowly tried to blend and merge these. The first sound is just the hum of a wash cycle, then into the circular surround sound recording. I had to overlap and try and join the beginning and end of each section to it seemed like a continuous circular movement.

Noticing similar patterns between the differet reccordings of washing machine

Editing this sound, I used a panning effect which added to the 'circular' behaviour of the sound - even though panning doesn't work amazingly on radio, it added to this effect and emphasised the sound - sounds amazing with headphones!
Probs the coolest effect I got out of the washing machine, by tracing the rubber circle part with my finger - it created a surround sound effect! even though you don't get that from the recording (could be a surround sound mic), still -  I think it's kinda cool
hydrophone ontop of tumbledryer - only slight small vibrations
recorded different stages of the wash cycle
With a contact mic, using a ruler inside the machine produced sounds like smooth scraping, staggered scraping (along the holey parts)
