Blind Listening
To present the sound pieces, I considered ways of giving clues or hints within the presentation as the sound pieces are extremely abstract with no knowledge of the development of my work. Also, just to make it a bit more interesting for the person listening to my work.
On the plinth is an iPad for the audio files, a blinfold and headphones.
I tested the piece on 3 of my coursemates and got the following feedback:
Hannah
“It made me want to draw the defined line, but not too sure how I would do the splodges”
“I focussed more on what you wre saying with the rhthmic feel of the ripple marks one”
There was difficulty with how to set up what order to put blindfold, headphones on and press play
Robbie
creates the effect of music
to listen to it is quite soothing
the way it is narrated and particular words evoked a vague imaginative exercise
links with meditation - started to think about being in a hillside in rainy weather - began picturing things - mind really drifted - it was like smoking weed
definitely put drawing up on opposite wall
it’s elegant as a thing, from the drawing method to the final thing
Jessie
The way that the voice was used kind of painted the marks imaginatively
creates/paints a journey
how about placing the drawings separately from the sound piece?? - very distanced though - feels that the drawings would be useful to see in some way
Critical Reflection:
Reflecting the aesthetic of the layout, I like how this is just a blank space with just the main materials at the centre/focus. I like how this relates loosely to the idea of immateriality in the sense that I don't want too much going on to draw visual attention as this is what I am trying to move away from. In terms of the feedback, it was mentioned about the difficulty in setting up, but I don't want to give too much instruction.
I feel that the blindfold works really well with the sound piece too becasue it evokes a similar sensation to how I felt when creating the drawings as I drew blindly.
In terms of the drawings, two people mentioned that they would have liked to see the drawings, but I am adamant that I don't want any visual work in this space becasue the whole focus is on the intangible with the sound now. I may play about with displaying the drawings seperately.
