An Ode to All the Lonely Socks: Concept
An ‘Ode to all the Lonely Socks’ is a piece which explores the idea of sounding spaces; a concept that looks at how sounds link with their environments. This piece reduces the space size to a washing machine or tumble dryer, manipulating machinery to be played ‘like an instrument’ and discovering the potential for hidden sounds within such familiar objects. Special microphone technology was used to ‘unearth’ these sounds – contact microphones, hydrophones and a zoom stereo recorder.
There is also a playful reference to the idea of referential listening, having used editing techniques to distort the recognisability of the sounds’ source. The idea for this piece is a humorous take on the traditional notion of an ode, which is traditionally used to address, or be dedicated to, a person.
