John Smith: Hotel Diaries
Originally, I found this a really hard theme to respond to. I guess from a Fine Art perspective, I always try to draw on experience when creating an artwork. I felt that I didn't have any first hand experience of war so making a piece on it seemed really difficult.
But then again the task is editing skills/designing sound in response to a theme - combine the two - my inability to respond is the subject - how can I portray this using editing skills...
I was shown this series of videos by film-maker John Smith. They are a series of videos following the War on Terror era of Bush and Blair, each one is some sort of personal response to the conflicts that took place in Afghanistan, Iraq etc... I was particulalry interested in Frozen War, the way he talks about his broken TV which is stuck on a clip during a news report on the conflict.
